The Age: “Israel moves to head off Gaza report” by Jason Koutsoukis, 16 October 2009
Palestinians in Gaza – most of whom are families that had to flee as refugees as Israel took control of their land by force – have lived with six decades of injustice, human rights violations and a world indifferent to them as human beings. The massacre of 1400 Palestinians in Gaza during the 22-day Israeli onslaught, erroneously called a war of self-defence, is but the last example of many atrocities and terrorization wrought by Israel’s military machine on the Gazan population. The crippling siege and blockade still continues with the world’s blessing as the people of Gaza continue to suffer the degradation of their society with the people suffering a slow physical and psychological weakening. The Goldstone report was the last glimmer of hope that would establish the truth of what has been going on and an attempt to bring Israel to account for its crimes against humanity.
If the world continues to shield Israel from accountability Israel will continue to act with impunity. The attempts to bury the report on the grounds that it will hamper the “peace process” is an abomination given that the “peace process” is the very tool that has been used to further entrench Israel’s apartheid subjugation of the Palestinian people still living in what was Palestine while those exiled continue to be denied their right of return and right to self-determination in what was their homeland. The peace Israel envisages is not one that attempts to redress the injustice of dispossessing the Palestinians but one that is attempting to eradicate all opposition to Jewish supremacy and its unequal takeover and control of the land and resources, which is precisely why “peace” cannot be achieved.
