Lavinia Moore (SA) responds to ‘Penalty Plea’ The Advertiser 15Oct09 October 16, 2009
“I refer to the article ‘Penalty Plea’ (Advertiser. 15/10/09)
It is not only Palestinians who call for action. The EU, the UN Human Rights Chief and many others have stated that Israel must be held to account regarding any war crimes or crimes against humanity it has committed. Even the USA and the UK have urged Israel to conduct credible investigations into the allegations.
Readers ought to be aware that although the 2008-9 Gaza offensive was an extreme example, Palestinians have suffered human rights violations over decades.
Just this week farmers near Bethlehem have had razor wire and armed soldiers preventing them from accessing their farms to harvest olives. How would West Coast wheat farmers or Adelaide hills orchardists or vignerons feel if that happened to them? I think I know!
Well, it happens every day-EVERY DAY- to Palestinian farmers in occupied Palestine.
Israel needs to be bought to account for both war crimes and crimes against humanity that it has committed and is committing.
Telling the world, as President Peres has done that Israel will not be judged by others about what it has done is an inadequate response.
War criminals and criminal states all must have their actions assessed by the same standards. Whether or not that is Israel or any other country.
And we all should call for perpetrators of war crimes to be punished, no matter who they are. That is the only way that perpetrators of the future may think twice before doing the same thing.
Thank You.
