Hamas government’s deputy chair: we want free and fair elections away from Quartet conditions 23Oct09 October 24, 2009

Dr. Ahmed Bahar, the First Deputy Chairman of the elected Legislative Council, said today that free and fair elections are in order, not the conditional democracy of the Quartet.

Bahar is among those elected to the PLC in 2006, an election that although free and fair, was not accepted by the United States or the Israelis. Sanctions were imposed and many of the winners were arrested. Now, with the possibility of both Legislative and Presidential elections being held in January 2010, the Quartet and the US both are pressuring their track. Bahar says their interference and imposition of conditions violate the rights of the Palestinian people.

“We want free and fair elections that the right climate must be created for away from the conditions of the Quartet that are imposed on the Palestinian people,” Dr. Bahar told a ceremony organized by the Hamas government in Gaza’s Shejaiya neighborhood on Friday.

The party says it does not support elections without a national consensus as they will add to the political divide between the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
