The Australian: “Middle East talks doomed to fail” by John Lyons, 4 November 2009

US Secretary of State Hiliary Clinton has failed to conceal the major back down by the Obama administration on the question of settlements. Her balancing act has failed to convince because fancy words cannot hide the ethnic cleansing that is being carried out as she speaks. Not only is the ongoing settlement construction very visible but right under her nose the Israelis are carrying out home evictions and house demolitions and turfing Palestinian families out onto the street as Jewish settlers and construction workers move in to what was predominantly Palestinian East Jerusalem. This frantic race to change the demographics and to secure as much land as
possible carried out by settler groups and facilitated by the state is against international law and UN resolutions, which require Israel not to transfer members of its civilian population into the occupied Palestinian territories nor to change the character and status of Jerusalem. Quite apart from Israel’s road map obligations which it has never adhered to, its actions are illegal and constitute a crime against the Palestinian people.
