Israel’s Vice Prime Minister, Slivan Shalom, also Minister for Regional Development
in the Negev and the Galilee, is coming to Melbourne as part of an ‘Israeli-Australian
Cultural Exchange’ Gala Dinner. Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard will attend.
As a senior minister in the Israeli government, and a member of the right wing Likud party,
Shalom has overseen the continued expansion of illegal Israeli settlements on Palestinian land.
Shalom openly advocates settling all of ‘Eretz Israel’ (greater Israel) which includes the West Bank.
Another of his projects is to build a canal connecting the Red Sea to the Dead Sea running along
the Jordan River. The land surrounding the river will be reserved for Israeli agriculture and
industrial projects denying Palestinians the ability to build in those areas. This is one of the
primary reasons given for denying Palestinians building permits in other parts of the West Bank
(the land supposedly reserved for agriculture). The project is another land-grab and could
possibly cause the dispossession of Palestinians already living in those areas.
Shalom has also been one of the most consistent defenders of Israel’s brutal policy in Gaza,
which prevents Palestinian access to basic food, goods and services. When talking about
the Israeli assault on Gaza in early 2009, which saw the deaths of around 1500 Palestinians,
Shalom is quoted as praising the Israel army as one of the most “moral armies” in the world.
This defender of war crimes is being welcomed into our country by Kevin Rudd. An act which
highlights the complicity of the Australian government

It is appalling that Israeli war criminals can be officially feted in Australia. Olmert and Shalom should be arrested and extradited to face the ICC. Their visit compromises the conventions Australia is party to e.g. in regard to to the Gaza blitzkrieg: Control Council Law No. 10, Punishment of Persons Guilty of War Crimes, Crimes Against Peace and Against Humanity, December 20, 1945, 3 Official Gazette Control Council for Germany 50-55 (1946).
War Crimes. Atrocities or offences against persons or property, constituting violations of the laws or customs of war, including but not limited to, murder, ill treatment or deportation to slave labour or for any other purpose of civilian population from occupied territory, murder or ill treatment of prisoners of war or persons on the seas, killing of hostages, plunder of public or private property, wanton destruction of cities, towns or villages, or devastation not justified by military necessity.
Additionally, there is only cursory immigration surveillance of ex-IDF conscripts who very probably committed human rights abuses in the Occupied Territories.
