The Australian: “Israel halts settlements under pressure” by John Lyons, 27 November 2009

THE Israeli offer to freeze settlements in the West Bank for 10 months is just a political ploy to please a US administration angered by Israeli intransigence over the settlements issue (Israel halts settlements under pressure, 27/11). The freeze does not apply to enhancing existing settlements or settlements in and around Jerusalem.

The Israeli authorities are expert at creating obstacles to negotiations and then coming up with a compromise. As an example, since the Oslo accords in 1993, the Israeli military has reduced the number of check points on the West Bank from 700 to 600. At this rate, it will take 96 years to dismantle them all.
