The Palestine Telegraph -  4 December 2009

The Palestinian Medical Relief Society reported on Thursday that the recent Israeli assault on Gaza Strip caused more than six hundred Palestinian disabilities. It called for all official and private institutions to support disabled rights and enable them to exercise their role in society.

It stressed in a statement on the occasion of World Disabled Day, which falls on the third of December of each year, that the number of disabled people requires increasing the responsibility toward them to find their place in society again as capable and self-reliant.

Besides,it explained that the Palestine commemorates this occasion, “but this time with a different way, as the Palestinian people remain steadfast, despite the wound, pain and the great calamity”. It asked: “Where is the civilized world from these crimes? Are the caravans of martyrs, injured and disabled and displaced people are not enough to take a serious stance?”

It indicates that the occurrence of disabilities is a common to anyone at any age as treacherous bullets do not differentiate between a young or old man, woman or child. Also, disability manifestations increased among the Palestinian people and life complexities increased psychologically, socially, educationally and professionally.

Finally , it stressed that the current Israeli siege is the major obstacle to bring a positive change the status of disabilities which have serious effects on their life. It called the international community to put pressure on the occupation to end the siege on Gaza Strip.
