Lavinia Moore (SA) responds to “Call to share Jerusalem” Adelaide Advertiser 10Dec09 December 10, 2009

“I refer to the article “Call to share Jerusalem” (Advertiser 10/12/2009).
I applaud the decision taken by the EU, that requires Jerusalem to be a shared capital for both Israeli Jews and Palestinian Muslims and Christians.
The fact is that Jerusalem is and has been for centuries a most significant holy site for all three Abrahamic religions.
The pity is that it was never enshrined as a world city, as was originally proposed when the partition of Palestine was being discussed, freely accessible to all persons of those three religions and enabling them to visit and worship without political and military interference as has occurred in recent decades.
Jerusalem is precious to Christians, Jews and Muslims and should not be “owned” or “annexed” by any one of them to the exclusion of the others.
Australia would do well to endorse the shared city position adopted by the EU.”
