BREAKING NEWS: UN says Israeli damages payment for Gaza destruction not finalized January 9, 2010

UN spokesman Martin Nesirky declined to set right what a UN News Service report called “certain inaccuracies” in reports saying Israel would pay 10 million US dollars in damages to the world body for damage caused by Israeli forces during their war on Gaza last year.
Nesirky said an accord had been reached “in principal,” but that details would be disclosed when it had been concluded and a payment made.
An assessment made by a team of UN officials in Gaza the summer after Israel’s war o the area assessed damage to a UN warehouse and three schools at 11.4 million US dollars.
Destruction to the central warehouse saw hundreds of tons of food and medicine incinerated.
The UN report said the issue was one of those on the agenda during a recent discussion between Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in and Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak over the phone.
The UN said it is waiting for a “green light” from the Israeli Government, and that this is expected to come “imminently,” after which the agreement will be formalized and a payment will be made.
