AUSTRALIAN TENNIS PROTEST: Shahar Peer loses 21Jan10 January 21, 2010

FINAL PEER POSTER

Shahar  Peer was defeated in the third round of the  women’s singles yesterday 23Jan10

ùçø ôàø

Editor’s Note 22Jan10: Thanks to Sol Salbe, we now have a photo from Israel’s oldest newspaper Ha’aretz (Hebrew) showing Shahar Peer promoting the Israeli army while the paper comments on AFP’s protest against her at the tennis.   Here, Shahar Peer stands next to an army tank smiling broadly and saluting.  Clearly, Israel has no compunction about linking sport and politics. Yet, our protest against Shahar Peer playing in the Australian Open, is considered as bringing  politics into sport.  Australians need to know that players like Shahar Peer are used to  normalise Israel through sport when Israel’s brutal treatment of the Palestinians in their own homeland, is anything but normal.  Sol Salbe, who is a full-time monitor of the Israeli and international media and a member of the Australian Jewish Democratic Society,  points out that “ Pe’er’s two-year service coincided with both the Lebanon war and the Summer Rains operation that followed the capture of Gilad Shalit. It is hard to describe someone who acts as an unofficial recruiting officer for the country’s armed forces under those circumstances as a person who has nothing to do with politics.” AFP will continue to protest against her playing in the Australian Open anywhere we can.  Please contact Moammar Mashni for more details at  info@australiansforpalestine.com or on 0419 999 773.

image001Editor’s note: We apologise to all our supporters for the sudden changes in plans.  Unfortunately, we were informed at the eleventh hour yesterday that  Tennis Australia will enforce their exclusion zone provided for under a special provision of the Melbourne Major Events Act, which makes public property the domain of the organisers of any major event, and they have refused us permission to protest in that zone.  Effectively, it prohibits us from  protesting anywhere in the vicinity of the tennis centre complex.  We are making other plans for protests, details of which you can obtain from Moammar Mashni at info@australiansforpalestine.com.  We will continue to post up signs around the city of Melbourne and will also continue to hand out flyers during peak periods.  The city is a very busy place during the tennis with many internationals visiting.  If any supporters wish to distribute flyers, please contact Moammar.

The comments that have been posted on this forum about our protest have regrettably been rather vitriolic and contain many blatant falsehoods: they do not deserve responses.  There is enough material on this website that would answer the falsehoods if people are genuinely interested in knowing the truth.

The Guardian published an article yesterday http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2010/jan/20/shahar-peer-israeli-australian-open

Despite Shahar Peer having been listed as playing in the first round in the evening before yesterday’s line-up, by the morning, her scheduled match had disappeared from the program.  That did not deter us from protesting in the tightly-controlled tennis environs courtesy of Tennis Australia security and the police.  On arrival, we were met with a barrage of cameras from the various TV networks and newspapers, and our public advocate Michael Shaik gave a lucid explanation as to why we were protesting Ms Peer’s decision to play.   This is in spite of  her already having been made aware of the contradiction in her being free to play in Israel while the indigenous Palestinians  are prevented from enjoying such privileges.  The protest was quiet and dignified, but our message was very clear and it was met in equal measure with outright disapproval, indifference and enthusiasm.   No doubt Ms Peer was aware of the protest since many Israeli newspapers had published our poster in the days leading up to the event. Today’s Herald Sun reported our protest, but sandwiched it in the middle of a report on Croatian rabble-rousers. Andra Jackson from The Age gave a fairer explanation of our protest and both Channels 9 and 10 included shots of the protest in their news broadcasts.  The Australian Jewish News reported the protest and included the photo of AFP Manager, Moammar  Mashni holding a placard.   While Tennis Australia will enforce their exclusion zone (a special provision under the Melbourne Major Events Act)  and refuse any protest within those parameters, we will continue with our protests in other locations for as long as Ms Peer remains in the tournament.  For details, please contact Moammar on info@australiansforpalestine.com The text of our flyer follows:

You’re more than welcome to come to Israel and see the so-called “APARTHEID” you’re describing.
The Palestinians are treated much better than in any other country in the world.
Most likely, better than any other ARAB country they live in.

I think that this website should be a shamed about the things that is written. Shahar Peer is a sportswomen and you are blemming her for things she have nothing to do with, israel is defending themself because if they wont they will have no where to go, but even if they were wrong i dont understand why you are doing it to shahar, she was in the army, yes, but she was in an army who is defending is country and not in a terror organisation which is killing ennicent people.
I hope that shahar will win the Australian open and that all of you people will start to think about the things that you are doing because it’s really really stooped.

this is disgusting…you should be wasting your efforts on the series of humanitarian violations by Hamas.

Look at the bigger picture and understand this through the proper context.

This is anti-semitism at its best.

Israel is a tiny piece of land with so much attention and hatred spewed towards it. And look at all of its accomplishments…Arab states just like to whine and cry and do nothing. Self-haters, don’t get anything done.

Astounding.

“You’re more than welcome to come to Israel and see the so-called “APARTHEID” you’re describing.”

This is a dishonest statement. Non-Jews are not ‘welcome’. Getting an entry visa is very difficult for a non-Jew, particularly if one has previously visited countries on the Zionist ‘hate list’.

Your attack on Shahar Peer has plumbed new depths – it simply reflects your extreme cowardice. It will have no impact on Israel’s policies and will not further the palestinian cause. Your crude and cowardly attack on the courageous Shahar highlights the rabid antisemitism that underpins australians for palestine. Why do you scum not attack players from Australia, Britain, the USA, Russia, Serbia and other countries who have murdered and continue to murder many thousands of innocent Iraquis, Afghans, and numerous muslims in the former USSR and the former Yugoslavia? And, as for apartheid – who are you kidding? Australia is one of the most strongly apartheid and most xenophobic nations. Look at what we have done (genocide) to the indigenous owners of Australia! Look at how we mistreat refugees. Wake up – get a life and promote the positive aspects of Palestine.

Australians for Palestine will spare no effort mindlessly to attack a lone Jewish female tennis star (just as the Third Reich did in the 1930s) and Jewish Israeli films that energetically criticise Israel and promote the Palestinian cause. But my several appeals to you for support of Save a Child’s Heart which focuses on the free treatment of Palestinian infants and children who have congenital or rheumatic heart defects and the training of Palestinian cardiologists (www.saveachildsheart.com) have been met with deafening silence! But at least we know where you stand…and of what you are made….

I will quickly (as I don’t really have all night for this) debunk your call for boycott point by point:

* Palestinians terror organisations violate palestinians’ human rights by using them as human shield (just one example).
* “…killing some 1400 palestinians, most of them civilians.” At least the IDF aims at combatants warning civilians of impending attacks (show me another army to do that), where Hamas cowardly targets Israeli population only (war crimes anyone?). Not everyone agrees to the Goldstone report, take it from someone who knows and was there and not just been brainwashed, check out: http://www.unwatch.org/site/ap.....ct=7536409
* “…absolute destitution…” where did all the billions of dollars Fatah and Hamas received from their brothers (Arafat’s bank account that’s were). Depriving aid – go to previous added link to learn more.
* “The right to play sport…” Where are there any arab, non palestinian tennis players (men or women) at the Australian Open. You’re not fighting for their right to freely play sports.
* “Protesting Shahar Peer’s…call for boycotts…”. Calling for a boycott of any kind on Israel (as in the past many Japanese car makers/Pepsi/others boycotted Israel under the Arab League’s pressure) did not and will not really stop the Israeli nation becoming world leaders in many areas (to be continued…).
* Shahar Peer served in the Israeli army as ALL citizen do – it’s a mandatory service, doesn’t matter if you agree with the government or not. If she cut a deal to reduce her service length – good for her, she is “an outstanding athlete” after all. Saying it was better than playing Sharapova is like me saying I enjoyed high school better than I do my job. Seriously, she probably meant atmosphere and a life experience wise, and I am sure you took it out of context anyway.
* “…shown no understanding of the oppressive conditions…” So what the hell do you want with her? Protest against someone that counts when it comes to these issues. Plus, she didn’t show support nor did she express her political views on the matter.
And to top that, did you cry or call for boycott when Israeli athletes murdered in Munich, hypocrites!
*”…By normalising relations …sport…academic exchanges and business arrangement…” If only that was the case then one day when you fall ill don’t come knocking on Israel’s door for an MRI scan (yes, developed there), and when run out of fresh drinking water, don’t come asking for help with the desal plant (yes, Israeli technology is building Melbourne’s).

If the day will come and you will win your battle against Israel (not likely), you would be the first one’s Hamas will shoot right between the eyes, be urinated upon and burnt, as after all, you are just another infidel for them.

The biggest cause of anti-Semitism is Zionism… Zionists present themselves as representing all Jews, and commit horrible atrocities in the name of the Judaism.

Peer has publicly associated her service with the Zionist military with her tennis activities by stating that she enjoyed her military service more than playing tennis against one of tennis’s great players… Peer voluntarily made the link in a public forum, and now must accept her sporting career is permanently linked to the atrocities of the Zionist military.

The Zionists posting here should probably try and contain their vitriol, and argue the case.

Australians were always known for their attitude of a “fair go” and for good sportsmanship until the likes of the karkars, shaik and their fellow travellers came to this country with their misbegotten fantasies about Israel and its treatment of the local arabs. It makes them feel important, worthwhile to promote a victimhood story of the poor palestinians who are their own worst enemies as demonstrated by their actions for over a century.

Go take your protests to somewhere that cares and leave us Australians to enjoy our sporting and cultural events uninterrupted.

Shahar Peer like all Israeli 18 year olds is required to serve in the IDF in order to protect the country of Israel against deranged, brainwashed psychopaths who continue to live in hope of making the tiny plot of land which is Israel, Judenrein.

I have until today invested considerable time and personal funds in the facilitation and promotion of Palestinian causes especially in the area of paediatric medical care. Because of your continued cowardly hounding of Shahar Pe’er I have today terminated my involvement in these causes.

Your website’s assertion that “in her being free to play in Israel while the indigenous Palestinians are prevented from enjoying such privileges” is a lie. “Indigenous” Palestinians can just as easily play tennis as the “indigenous” Jews!

You choose to ignore the fact that numerous Arabs, Israeli or not, are enrolled in Israeli universities as students (many on Israeli sponsored scholarships) and faculty and are treated equally as professionals and business persons. Israeli and Palestinian Arabs have the right to vote (there are three Arab parties in Israel’s Knesset! – how many independent Arab – let alone Jewish – parties are there in Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Egypt!?) and can sit freely on the front as well as the back or anywhere they wish on Israel’s buses and trains! Your claim that Israel is an apartheid state is dishonest and shameful rhetoric!

The fact that you harass/terrorise a lone, independent Jewish woman tennis star like Shahar Pe’er, rather than boycotting Israeli inventions and products such as Intel processors, Microsoft software, drip-feeding, mini-tomatoes, health care products (such as interferon, copaxone and rasagiline for multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and other serious illnesses), MRI and other medical imaging technology (e.g. Given’s capsule camera for detecting bowel cancer), the coronary arterial stent (which has revolutionised the treatment of heart disease and saved many millions of people worldwide) etc etc reflects a cowardly mean-spirited and mindless attitude that will forever consign the Palestinian cause to the wilderness.

You do a great disservice to the Palestinians – shame on you

Zionist writers here that are concerned for the feelings of Shahar Peer, or spew venom at the decent Australians who run this web site, should spare a thought for the poor Palestinians who watched their family members burned alive, when sprayed with White Phosphorous by Israelis. The feelings of Shahar Peer or your own paranoid feelings of antizionism or the rights or wrongs of protesting sport, are incomparable to the well documented White Phosphorous deaths suffered by Palestinians during Cast Lead.

Shahar Pe’er wins first round of the Australian Open

So where has the protest got you? You did not manage to stop Shahar. At best, you simply persuaded another bunch of folk, who do not believe that politics and sport mix well, at least in Australia, that the AFP is a disruptive group who are best ignored and marginalised. While you and your blackshirts focus on terrorizing an innocent, independent woman tennis star, peace seems to have broken out in the West Bank (WB) where towns such as Jenin, Nablus and Ramallah are experiencing unrivalled positive growth and prosperity. Furthermore, the MDA and Red Crescent have agreed to cooperate fully in Jerusalem and environs, and WB residents are now permitted freely to use the Jerusalem –Modiin Road. Admittedly much of this info derives from the Wall Street Journal (owned by the Jew lover Rupert Murdoch), the AJN and Haaretz. There is also robust evidence that the PA is not pushing the peace process because they need the IDF to defend them from Hamas until their own Fatah troops are fully trained.
By all means continue doing what you wish – but if you really (seriously mistaken in my view) believe that Israel is an apartheid state like SA, then to bring Israel to heel you will need to persuade the USA and all other nations to place a total embargo on all trade and goods supply to Israel – that, and not the sports boycott, is what brought an end to SA apartheid. Shahar Pe’er can neither help nor hinder the Arab (“Palestinian”) – Israeli conflict – and cowardly terrorist attacks on her will only deter people sympathetic to the Palestinian cause.

Hello,

I am an Israeli currently studying in the USA, getting my Masters in Peace Education (yes, there is such a thing). I am extremely critical towards the policies and actions of the Israeli government, both historically and in the present. These actions have been, in my opinion, oppressive, subjugating, and hypocritical in light of Israel’s own tumultuous past. the situation calls for the advancement of programs aimed at increasing awareness and motivating global participation with the clear objective of pressuring Israel into modifying and correcting their ways.

That said, in my studies one thing that continuously comes up is the delicate balance between effective and futile action. There are a plethora of different, creative manners in which to raise awareness about a topic that is obviously deserving of such – not one of them include the humiliation and targeting of an innocent young girl. It is true Palestinian youth probably possess not the opportunities Shahar Peer, and myself, have, yet this alone should not be adequate as justification for your actions. You can do much better than this!

In addition, the manner in which Peer is handling the situation is admirable and reflects toughness, sportsmanship, and dedication that is beyond her years. With every targeted demonstration you are, ironically, making her more appealing in the public eye. your efforts are, to some degree self-opposing.

Finally, as an activist and one who knows much about this issue i would advise you to find another venue. Your work is important and should be conducted. The pleas of the Palestinian people must be heard on the international scale and appreciated by those who know little about it. what you are doing is self-defeating and quite honestly moronic. With time public opinion will sway against you and it is you who will be perceived as the fanatic and oppressive. It’s unfortunate but it’s true.

Please consider what i wrote here today and continue representing those who are in dire need.

Respectfully,

Avi criden

Does anyone even dream of holding Andy Roddick, Andy Murray or Leyton Hewitt responsible for the fact that the USA, the UK and Australia have murdered thousands of innocent Iraqi and Afghan civilians (all “collateral” of course) – and in the case of Australia, the genocide and continuing occupation and maltreatment and discrimination of and against our Aboriginal people? Ms Sonjar Karkar and her AFP blackshirts should pay a visit to the Fitzroy crossing or North Queensland…or check on the number of Tasmanian Aboriginals who survived the Australian massacre. None of this justifies any atrocities that might have been committed by Israel, Hamas and the PLO – but what justification is there for holding Shahar Pe’er responsible for the ills of the Levant?

Anyone who wishes to read my complete item is welcome to read it on of the New Zealand Scoop website http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL1001/S00130.htm. You can read a lot more information on the matter which is not available elsewhere in English. I regard it as crucial that people who decide to protest or support Ms Pe’er should do it on the basis of informed knowledge, rather than preset convictions.(For what it is worth on balance I do not support the protest.)

As for the photo from Haaretz you can see it for yourself at http://www.haaretz.co.il/hasit.....44086.html. The photo is credited to Sefi Magrizo who is a real person. (I presume IR cannot read Hebrew, otherwise s/he could have checked it for her/him self.)

As far as I can tell the picture is not of a tank but a Nemera/Namer armoured personnel carrier which is based on the Merkava tank chassis. However this is not my area of expertise. The marking are those of the Kfir brigade an infantry brigade whose major duties in recent years were based in the West Bank. I am not aware of it having tanks which strengthen my view that it is an APC.

I would be proud to wear the IDF uniform – the IDF self-defends a nation of people that has been persecuted ceaselessly for millenia. Unlike the British, US, Russian or Australian uniform, the IDF uniform has never been used gratuitously to kill many thousands of innocents in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Furthermore – how can we be sure that the images depicted on the AFP site including those produced by Salbe have not been produced by photoshop?

All this, this horrible collection of ignorant and totally groundless abuse against AFP, goes to show that sport is civil society’s warfare; anyone who threatens its icons will get a kick in the guts. Yet the icon in this case is an icon of the IDF, not the ADF. So one has to ask, what has brought this nation to the point of waving the flag of another country as well as our own, and defending it against perceived threats – the ‘terrorist black shirts’ of AFP?
In the run up to Australia Day, fast becoming an unseemly celebration of our intrinsic racism, we could have expected that attacking an Australian player at the Open would produce a hysterical response. But Shahar Peer is an Israeli, representing her nation abroad and with everything that this entails. Are the defenders of politics-free-sport aware of what this means? I think not. Do they know what the IDF did in south Lebanon in 2006, an attack on Lebanese Palestinian refugees when Shahar Peer was evidently serving her time with the army? Didn’t they hear about the mass drop of cluster bombs which was Israel’s parting gift? The targeting of Red Cross ambulances with missile strikes and of people trying to escape?
Of course Peer had no choice in joining the IDF – learning to use a gun to kill people you believe might threaten you is deemed essential in modern Israel – all of Israel’s children must do it, and do it well. Israel is not renowned for its sporting prowess; perhaps her need for play-acting is less when the real thing is available. But to pretend that Peer can be treated like any other sports star is simply to be duped. The attendance of Yuval Rotem at the Open speaks for itself – Israel’s cultural ambassadors are one of its main weapons in its propaganda war, and in its struggle to present itself as a civilised and democratic nation. The reality of course is profoundly different – it is by definition a racist nation, and by declaration an apartheid one, as well as an abuser of all international conventions on justice , war and human rights; as such ALL aspects of Israel’s relationship with the non-Jewish world are a legitimate target for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions.

Re the rant by “David” – simply Hezbollah and Hamas propaganda – ignores the fact that Israel has the right to defend itself against daily unprovoked rocket barrage amounting to thousands of rockets – and WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO!

In contrast, neither Iraq, Afghanistan nor Vietnam fired a single rocket or any missile against the USA, Australia or the UK – yet no one seeks to boycott Roddick, Hewett or Murray, for example, for the unprovoked murder by the USA, Australia and the UK of thousands of innocent Iraqi, Afghan and Vietnamese citizens.

And as for Federer – why no boycott of him now that Switzerland has voted to eradicate all minarets and other Muslim symbols from its soil (something that not even the most right wing Israeli would even dream of suggesting should happen in Israel)?

Is there possibly some bias here – perhaps redolent of anti-Semitism?

Perhaps you would like to put up some evidence of the “barrage of 1000′s of rockets” being launched, independent evidence that is, not Israeli propaganda. As for unprovoked, Israel ignored the cease fire brokered by Egypt which Hamas (the legally elected government)honored, and continued with the inhuman blockade of Gaza as well as continued actions against Palestinian fishermen, killing, imprisoning them, and destroying their boats.
We all know how tolerant the Israeli’s are towards Christians for one, with their spitting on Christian clergymen and desecrating Christian symbols.
Then we have the old chesnut of anti-semitism, I have friends who are Semites, and believe it or not I also have some Jewish friends.
Federer along with the other 3 are not poster boys or propagandists for any of the Governments involved in Iraq Afghanistan and weren’t born when the Vietnam was on.
One more thing I wore the Australian as a “Nasho” but protested the three wars.

Cheers

Sorry, I meant I wore the Australian UNIFORM

I too have worn the Aussie uniform and am bitterly opposed to all war, and especially those, like Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam, which are not based on self defence and have no rationale other than ensuring the economic benefits of war (for the West) – Haliburton etc

Shahar Peer is not a poster girl for Israel or the IDF – she is first and last an independent tennis player. Federer and the other three boys are all proud representatives of their countries! Furthermore they benefit from substantive sponsorship – are you sure that their respective countries and sponsors are all absolutely moral and have no blood on their hands? Perhaps it is unwise to throw stones at Peer unless you are 100% certain of the pristine morality of all the other competitors and their countries at the Open. After all, how moral is Russia or Serbia or Croatia?

Re Israelis spitting on “Christian clergymen and desecrating Christian symbols.” and “Then we have the old chesnut of anti-semitism, I have friends who are Semites, and believe it or not I also have some Jewish friends”:
You have some cheek! Since CE 100, Christians have been responsible for the massacre of at least 12 million Jews and the dispossession and torture of millions more (have you heard of the Inquisition and the Holocaust – or are these also lies put about by the ‘perfidious Jews’?). We Jews/Israelis should, but do not spit on Christians (evidence for your accusation please!). It was the Christian Church inspired pogroms and the Christian Church inspired Holocaust that made us finally realize that we must return to our Homeland – Israel. Indeed, thoughout my 12 years schooling in Australia, Christians told me, almost daily, to “go back to where you come from – Jerusalem” – whereas in fact a Gestapo Luger pointed at my head forced me to leave my native Vienna at the age of two.

“barrage of 1000’s of rockets” being launched, independent evidence that is, not Israeli propaganda:
There is a ton of independent evidence from UN observers, visiting Christian politicians (Tony Blair is a Catholic, is he not?), reams of independent TV and other media (Arab, Australian, UK, US, European, Christian and Muslim) coverage – not to mention the frequent and recorded boasts of Nasrallah/Hezbollah and Hamas – and well you know it.

In responding to you initially I thought that you were rational – but I was seriously mistaken (e.g. what on Earth has alleged “spitting on Christian Clergyman and symbols” got to do with the cowardly persecution by the AFP of a young innocent woman whose sole purpose in visiting Australia was to play tennis like all other 100+ visiting players). My one satisfaction is that although Shahar lost (as anticipated) last night, she played to a full house – your/the AFP boycott did not work – or at least not as planned unless the AFP is a silent sponsor of Tennis Australia – without the AFP posters and this AFP website few might have known that she was playing…

As I said before this is not the place for personal abuse, you know how to contact me. If your aim is to vent your anti AFP spleen, go for it.
You have still produced NO evidence for any of your claims re AFP Hamas Hezbollah or anything else, now the cricket is more important than this.

Have a nice night.

Israel most definately do use their sporting players, as well as other cultural events to promote and normalize international views on israel.
Israel is an apartheid racist nation. It is a rogue state, committing war crimes ,such as the starvation and seige of gaza. It supports and unleashes its judaic terrorists with indifference to international law. The extra judicial killing of a member of the democratically elected government of palestinans in Gaza exposed their internal terror cells for all to see.
Israel, its professors, universities, and its sporting diplomats should be barred from entering tournaments as israeli representatives, and israel should be barred from international football, the eurovision song contest and any other sporting/cultural events that it uses to promote its racist apartheid state of Israel.
The palestinan /Israel issue, is the issue of our time, and we should stand on the side of history as we did against the racist apartheid state of south africa

Great job! You would never see this in the US. Our media and policitians are controlled by Jews and Pro-Israelis. A few Congressmen and women have spoken out, and been promptly defeated. So your work is very important. Australia and Europe must speak up loud and clear that Israel is a state formed by terrorism against civilians, ethnic cleansing, and a complete disregard for hundreds of UN resolutions and international law. You have a small group of people who feel they are chosen and have a right to ignore the wishes of the entire world. The entire world pays the price in suffering, polarization, and terrorism.

And ignore the pro-Israeli clowns here. They are big mouthed supporters of war crimes, and violations of the Geneva conventions. We hung Nazis and Japanese for the same things that the Israelis do regularly with our tax dollars. The people are brainwashed to speak up for the aggressors.
