The Australian: “Ehud Barak defies Banjamin Netanyahu on threat to Israel” by John Lyons, 28 January 2010
Israeli Defence Minister Mr Barak’s warning that Israel would end up losing its Jewish character or becoming undemocratic “and we will turn into an apartheid state” echoes similar earlier predictions by Edhud Olmert. But the fact is that Israel already is an apartheid state which controls and
occupies the Palestinian people dividing them not only from its Israeli citizens but from each other with varying degrees of human rights violations
and racial discrimination, while it continues to colonise what little remains of Palestine. This is not democracy and it is a violence against the Palestinian people long denied their rights because of these policies. Even leaving aside the Palestinians in the illegally occupied Palestinian
territories who are not citizens of Israel, Israel’s so-called democracy does not treat all its citizens equally as it prioritises its Jewish citizens over its non-Jewish Arab citizens despite giving the latter the vote. For six decades Israel has denied Palestinians their inalienable right of return while allowing any Jewish person from anywhere in the world the right to come to Israel and take up citizenship.
