I refer to the item on page 24:”Hamas back flip etc…” Not having read the actual Hamas response, I cannot comment on whether or not they back flipped.  However, I do wish to comment on the item accompanying the headline.

To get the record straight, Hamas was democratically elected as the legitimate government by Palestinians. Their opponents’ and Israel’s response? Illegally detain Hamas parliamentarians that the Palestinian people elected. And mount what has been a coup: the required elections have failed to materialise.

Secondly, there have been many occasions when Hamas has attempted to secure peace, including by respecting ceasefires and seeking dialogue with its opponents. It has never invaded and bombed Tel Aviv in the same way that Israel has done to Gaza.

Israel continues to persecute starve, imprison and murder Palestinians, particularly those who had the temerity to elect the “wrong” political party.

I think that it is strange therefore that it is Hamas that is said to have a violent ideology, but never is this description used in mainstream Australian media when referring to any of Israel’s political parties.
