The Australian: “Expelling Israeli diplomat was a confected, self-serving exercise” by Greg Sheridan, 29 May 2010

The killing of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, now accredited to the Israeli Mossad, although not publicly admitted, was an illegal act of murder that most writers on the subject seem to accept as a politically expedient act that eliminated one of Israel’s named enemies. Not even in death is the truth of this Palestinian’s biography really uncovered. The creator of the labels and what we are allowed to know of him is the very country that assassinated him. And this is not the first time that Israel has assassinated Palestinians, acting as judge, jury and executioner and at times violator of other nation’s sovereignty in order to do so.

The sanctity of life, the sovereignty of nations and the respect for international law are all undermined by condoning political assassinations. But more importantly what is never mentioned in all the rationalising of Israel’s behaviour is that fact that the state of Israel is still to this day oppressing, colonising and violating the rights of the indigenous people of what was historic Palestine and that as a consequence they continue to
resist the occupation of their land and people. The existential threat that Israel’s belligerent occupation policies pose for the Palestinian people does not even enter into the equation of those seeking to justify the assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh.
