The Australian: “Israelis take to seas to avoid PR disaster over Gaza activist flotilla”, 30 May 2010

The Free Gaza Flotilla is a necessary beacon to highlight the world’s indifference to and collusion with Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. While Israel claims there is no humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the World Health Organisation begs to differ, saying two-thirds of the people of Gaza are food insecure. In a population where over half are children, 10 percent of these children suffer from chronic malnutrition directly attributable to the siege and blockade, which is now in its fourth year.

It has been left to the brave concerted action of people of conscience from civil society of 50 different countries to show up the fact that 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza are being denied their freedom of movement and being kept hungry and deprived of goods that are necessary for a dignified life. No amount of Israeli PR spin will bring back the lives of the now 500 who have died during the siege and blockade because they were prevented from getting timely medical aid. Bringing a whole society to its knees is a cruel policy of attempting to break the spirit of a people and an indication of how blatantly Palestinian human rights are ignored by the world.
