Mark Bradbeer (VIC) writes to The Age on Israel’s attack on the Gaza flotilla 1Jun10 June 1, 2010

“Israel’s behaviour is beyond chutzpah. Two weeks ago, the World Health Organisation urged Israel to end the ongoing 3-year long siege of Gaza* and allow humanitarian aid into this shattered city*. Armed Israeli commandos now attack such a humanitarian aid shipment, killing and maiming with impunity.

In 1944, when Britain was fighting the Nazis, terrorists lead by Yitzak Shamir assassinated a British government minister. Prime Minister Churchill called them “gangsters” whose “wicked activities must cease, and those responsible rooted out”**. In 1948, the terrorist leader, Menachim Begin, formed a ‘political party’ which Albert Einstein warned was “no ordinary political party. This is the unmistakable stamp of a Fascist party for whom terrorism (against Jews, Arabs, and British alike), and misrepresentation are means, and a “Leader State” is the goal. In the light of the foregoing considerations, it is imperative that the truth about Mr. Begin and his movement be made known”***. Gangster Shamir and terrorist, Begin, were never rooted out, but became Israeli Prime Ministers, and the Israeli government has since moved to the right of them!

Why do we have a cultural exchange program with Israel? Let’s follow Elvis Costello’s lead instead and have a cultural boycott.
