Robert Haines (VIC) writes to the Foreign Minister re Israel’s attack on the Gaza flotilla 2Jun10 June 2, 2010

Dear Minister,

I am writing to demand that the Australian Government condemn, in the strongest
possible terms, the murder of an unknown number of people (it seems between 9
-19) yesterday by the Israeli military on the aid convoy heading to Gaza.

The Israeli attack on the aid flotilla in international waters is a breach of
all international law and norms of conduct, and no civilized state would resort
to such unprovoked violence knowing that the boats were carrying not just aid
to people suffering from an illegal siege, but also carrying hundreds of
civilians, parliamentarians, journalists, human rights lawyers, doctors and
solidarity activists from over 50 countries.

Although Australia for the past three years has remained silent, and therefore
complicit, in the illegal economic sanctions against the people of Gaza,
sanctions which contravene international law and which cause immense human
suffering to the 1.5 million men, women and children of Gaza, we expect you to
have the courage to speak up today on this issue.

Moreover, if there is a vote in the United Nations to condemn this criminal act
by Israel, I expect my country to join in this condemnation, not just to
abstain, as we usually do.
