Rev Dr Alan Reid (Vic) writes to the FM Stephen Smith MP on Australia’s position re Israel 14Jun10 June 14, 2010

Dear Minister,

I am sorry to write to you regularly (third time) but I was irritated to read a report in the Australian Jewish News that the PM with you in attendance had hosted a dinner for Jewish community leaders in which:

1) the PM had not criticised the specific violence against the Gaza relief flotilla; and

2) Australia had not supported a UN call for an independent investigation.

I will be interested to see if the PM holds a dinner for leaders of the Australian Arab community or is your government only interested in gaining the support of a small but very vocal and strong financial group?

It is a mystery to me why Australia continues to advocate sanctions against Iran (a country for which I hold no brief) when we make no comment on the Israeli possession of nuclear weapons and their failure to sign the NPT. Perhaps you could explain this position taken by our government.
