The Age: “Israel probe ‘trade-off’“,  16 June 2010

Not only is Israel’s proposed investigation into the nine Turkish activists on board the Gaza flotilla highly suspect, given Israel’s tampering with the evidence and the disinformation it peddled, but one of the independent observers it has chosen is hardly impartial. The Age report that Lord Trimble has recently joined the Friends of Israel and is a high-profile supporter of Israel clearly indicates he will have a conflict of interest – not that the observers are given any role apart from being silent observers.

This is clearly a case of the alleged culprit being allowed to investigate themselves. Once again Israel takes on the role of judge, jury and executioner so that it can act outside the law with impunity. If easing the blockade is supposed to satisfy us in exchange for Israel carrying out this highly flawed investigation it is clear the war crime of collective punishment of a people, already unjustly dispossessed and cruelly occupied, will continue albeit at a less troublesome pace. The United States has once again shown it will do anything to protect Israel from censure despite rising international criticism.
