Lavinia Moore (SA) writes to Israeli Defence Minister Barak re home demolitions 21Jul10 July 27, 2010

To the  Minister of Defence
Ehud Barak

Dear Minister Barak,

I am writing to you regarding the very recent building and home demolitions which have taken place in the West Bank, in particular those that occurred in the al-Farisiya area of the Jordan valley on the 19th of July 2010.

From information I have at hand I am aware that families, including at least 52 children lost their homes as a result.

As a mother and grandmother I find such actions deeply distressing. As a human rights activist I view such actions as unjust and inhumane. They ignore the elemental truth that those whose properties and homes have been destroyed are fellow humans like me. And like you.

I condemn all such demolitions which give every appearance of being discriminatory against Palestinians and also because they do not accord with international laws and conventions.

I urge you, and the Israeli government generally to bear international laws and standards in mind when you are considering all future eviction or demolition orders. I ask you to also consider how such behaviour is likely to be viewed by the international community, of which, of course, Israel is a part.

I call upon the Israeli Government and its relevant authorities to place a moratorium on all house demolitions and forced evictions in the West Bank and other occupied territories until Israeli laws and procedures are aligned to international laws.

Finally, I would ask for you and the Israeli government to act to transfer responsibility for and power over decisions related to planning and building regulations and infrastructure to be placed wholly and solely in the hands of the local Palestinian communities.

I look forward to your response to my letter.
