The Australian: “Benjamin Netanyahu plans a surprise for direct peace talks”, 24 August 2010

So Israeli Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to “surprise the sceptics” yet his tactics to date speak of the same mindset that refuses to acknowledge that Israel is occupying Palestinian land and illegally colonising it to the detriment of Palestinian rights to self-determination.

It is difficult to see how direct negotiations will bring any measure of justice when the preconditions Netanyahu insists on abrogating go to the heart of the problem. These preconditions are not optional concessions as Netanyahu likes to make out but the primary obligations of Israel under the Road Map initiated by President George W. Bush and the Quartet.

The reality is the US administration under President Obama, with all the levers of power available to it were singularly unable to stop Israel’s ongoing colonisation and ethnic cleansing of what remains of Palestine. Yet direct negotiations between the occupier and the occupied is supposed to yield a result that will “surprise the sceptics”!
