1101 – Big Ideas: The Failure of the Jewish Establishment

Young American Jews have grown up in a different world to their forebears, and as a result their views of Israel are often at odds with the Jewish establishment. As the Israeli government reflects its growing ultra-Orthodox population, older liberal American Jews find themselves uncomfortably supporting an illiberal cause, while their children aren’t tempted to support the cause at all. Associate Professor of Journalism and Political Science at the City University of New York, and Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation, Peter Beinart identifies the schism in Jewish America: ‘For several decades, the Jewish establishment has asked American Jews to check their liberalism at Zionism’s door, and now, to their horror, they are finding that many young Jews have checked their Zionism instead.’

Peter Beinart is a Schwartz Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation, and Associate Professor of Journalism and Political Science at The City University of New York. He is also Senior Political Writer for The Daily Beast, and a Contributor to Time.   His first book, The Good Fight: Why Liberals – And Only Liberals – Can Win the War on Terror and Make America Great Again, was published in 2007. His second book, The Icarus Syndrome: A History of American Hubris, was published in July this year.
