MELBOURNE, PSC: Speakout for Gaza and the Wall 11Jul09 July 11, 2009
PALESTINE SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN
11 July 2009
Wet, cold and miserable is the only way one could described the weather as the ever-faithful supporters of Palestine determined to go ahead with their planned speakout. Melbourne’s shoppers were not so willing to brave the elements and the city was largely empty. That many people are still away for school holidays did not help. Nevertheless, activists are usually undaunted by such matters because they know the Palestinians are suffering unimaginable conditions and the world needs to be told. Thus, sacrificing two hours on a Saturday morning to show whomever passes by what Israel is denying to the Palestinian population in Gaza – so many basic staples and items are constantly refused entry into Gaza and samples were displayed today – is worth it to even reach one person. There always are people keen to know more.
Various speakers, including our public advocate Michael Shaik, spoke passionately to give the Palestinians a voice even as far away as Melbourne. Cards were distributed to passersby telling them about the International Court of Justice’s ruling against Israel’s apartheid Wall 5 years ago. People were asked to sign and post their card to our Foreign Minister Stephen Smith in protest.
The weather might have been against Palestine today, but the protest movement against Israel’s apartheid policies and practices is growing. There will be other days to spread our message.
People who want cards to distribute and send themselves, please contact Moammar on info@australiansfor palestine.com and they will be posted out to you.
