Palestine Note – 10 September 2010

Early Friday morning Israeli warplanes dropped six shells on sites across the Gaza Strip in what is reported to be retaliation for two projectiles launched from Gaza into the Negev this week, Ma’an News Agency reported Friday.

Five injuries have been reported so far.

Ma’an said:

An Israeli military spokeswoman said a “terror target” and two smuggling tunnels, in the north and southern Strip respectively, were the targets of the attacks.

Residents of Gaza city reported three explosions heard simultaneously at the Ansar government building west of Gaza city, a security center in the city’s At-Tuffah neighborhood, and in an open area in the northern Gaza Strip in Bet Hannoun.

Israel’s daily newspaper Haaretz cited Hamas sources claiming five were injured when Israeli fighter jest hit a training center in Gaza City.

A military spokeswoman told Ma’an the airstrikes were in response to “security-related incidents” earlier in the week. She added that Israel “holds Hamas solely responsible” for attack on Israel that emanate from Gaza, Ma’an quoted.

According to AFP news agency, Gaza militants fired another projectile into Israel following the airstrikes:

Militants in Gaza fired a projectile into southern Israel on Friday just hours after Israeli warplanes carried out a series of raids across the coastal strip, a military spokeswoman told AFP.

She said it was not clear whether it was a mortar round or a rocket which slammed into the Shaar HaNegev area close to Gaza’s northeastern border with Israel. It caused no injuries or damage.
