The Australian: “Middle East peace talks close to collapse over ‘Jewish state’ controversy” by John Lyons, 13 October 2010

Israel’s first Prime Minister declared in the 1948 Declaration of
Independence: “The State of Israel will be based on based on Liberty,
Justice and Peace, as envisaged by the prophets of Israel; it will ensure
complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants,
irrespective of religion, race or gender; it will guarantee freedom of
religion, conscience, language, education and culture; it will safeguard the
Holy Places of all religions; and it will be faithful to the principles of
the Charter of the United Nations”.

Fine words but in reality what has been practicised is a far cry from these
sentiments – a disconnect similar to Israel’s fine words saying it wants
peace yet in practice it builds settlements to continue its ongoing
colonisation in defiance of international law and UN resolutions causing the
further dispossession of the Palestinians it supposedly wants to make peace
with.

Demanding that Israel be seen as a Jewish state in the new loyalty oath is
one of the many emerging planks legislated by the Israeli Knesset designed
to legalise Israel’s racism against its non-Jewish indigenous Arab
population.  Asking them to endorse a discriminatory regime that
dispossessed them and that legalises its discrimination against them is
asking them to validate the wrong done to them – a wrong the state is light
years away from apologising for or making amends.
