Mark Bradbeer (VIC) responds to Martin Peretz’ “Israeli leaders fight for civil society”, The Australian, 14Oct10 October 15, 2010

‘Martin Peretz (The Australian 14/10/2010, p8) seems rather starry-eyed about the less religiously fundamental Israeli politicians who are “aristocrats of the old Likud” and its forerunners, “honest”, “true liberals” and “fighting for a civil society” in their actions regarding demands for a loyalty pledge to Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. Somewhat circumspect, he acknowledges his friend’s observation that this legislation ‘borders on fascism’. But has it changed since 1948 when Einstein said that this is “a political party closely akin in its organization, methods, political philosophy and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties” (The New York Times, 4/12/1948)*.
