Press Release – One Planet Films

Award-winning documentary ‘Return To Gaza’ by local crew screens in Byron.

Return to Gaza features, well-known Australian musician Fetah Sabawi (Superheist, Jericco) who dreams of going back to Gaza to live. He travels to Gaza just prior to the ill-fated Palestinian elections in 2006 in the hopes of starting a music school for refugees. He sets off with his wife and kids. He wants to be part of the solution.

Director, Michael Weatherhead will be attending the screening of his challenging documentary on the 29 November at the Byron Community Centre and will provide a discussion following the screening.

“Although it was shot in the Middle East, it has been a real local production. As a concept, it was a finalist in Screenwork’s competition, Life’s a Pitch (2007). Mark Sbarrato, who was the editor, I met through Film Artists Co-operative. Andy Bambach, who has played a key role in post-production, was originally recommended by Screenworks some years ago, and it is being promoted by Electric Forest Productions. All locals!” says Michael.

Return To Gaza been nominated for six awards and won two in the USA, an Indie Award of Excellence and an Accolade.

“The Gaza situation is one fraught with danger and fear. Many have captured the turmoil in the area on film, but none with such chilling personal insight as Return to Gaza” Gold Coast Film Festival 2010.

It is being screened as a part of International Day of Solidarity for the Palestinian People to raise funds for Olive Kids (olivekids.org.au), which supports Palestinian orphans.

Produced by One Planet Films in association with Denoux Films Productions between 2006 and 2010, it was filmed in Australia, Egypt, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. An early version of the film with the title, Road To Palestine was screened at the Byron Bay International Film Festival in 2008.
