Dr Niko Leka (NSW) responds to letter by Ms Stein in the Australian Nursing Journal v18 no6 6Dec10 December 6, 2010

I am appalled by the letter written by Ms Stein in ANJ v18 no6, in response to the article by Krista McClelland (‘No black as black’, ANJ v18 n4, p12).

Why has the ANJ, with its excellent coverage of social justice issues, published extremist political views that incite racial hatred? How could any nurse not feel revulsion at the awful calculus of love Stein quotes in closing? ["There will be no peace in Israel until they (the Palestinians) love their children more than they hate ours."]   from Stein is entitled to her views, but they do not belong in a nursing journal.

McClelland’s report contained facts, and observations made by eyewitnesses. it did not offer any political view. Those facts and observations revealed a horrifying state of affairs.

Appalled by the illegalities of the assault on Gaza citizens throughout the world are joining the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign to bring Israel to its senses, and respect international law.

However, convey my thanks to Ms Stein for drawing my attention to McClelland’s article. I confess I missed it, as I focused on the article about refugee health in that particular issue.

Perhaps that was why the ANJ published her letter?

Dr Niko Leka, E.N.
