The Age: “Human spirit triumphs as Egypt takes long walk to freedom” by Thomas Friedman, 14 February 2011

No no Mr Friedman!  Democracy in the Arab world began in Palestine with ‘free and fair elections’ organised by the US. But the Palestinians voted for the wrong party – Hamas – and so we all conspired to lock them up in the Gaza ghetto. Their persecution by Israel with our consent, was one of the forces that stirred the Egyptian revolution.  And while we may all indulge in self congratulatory rhetoric about the Egyptian people’s freedom, the reality looks a lot like a desert mirage. Only one thing has changed so far – Mubarak has gone to his holiday home.  His party, his army, his police, are just the same, with ‘Mubarak’s poodle’ in charge. While back in Palestine, ‘Bush’s poodle’ – Blair – plans new ‘elections’ for what remains of it.
