Lavinia Moore (NSW) writes to Adelaide Advertiser and The Age re silence of our media on US veto 21Feb11 February 22, 2011

The obstruction in the Security Council by the USA of a resolution that otherwise unanimously condemned Israel’s illegal actions that contravened numerous international laws and conventions- and previous resolutions- is indicative of that country’s own disregard of those same conventions and laws.

Birds of a feather flock together?

What this action should result in include the following.

1. Abolition of the veto power in the Security Council on the basis that it is undemocratic and is not conducive to achieving international cooperation and peace.

2. Acknowledgment by the rest of the world’s people, and the leaders and governments who represent them, that given the disconnect between fine sounding rhetoric promulgated by USA representatives and the actions that country has taken and the interventions it has made in the world at large, that the USA does not promote democracy, peace and freedom.  It acts purely in terms of short term self-interest.

At first glance this may seem to be a loss to those seeking to gain freedom and democracy for themselves, but surely they will be better off if they know in the first place that they cannot rely on the USA to genuinely back them and their aspirations.

The betrayal by the USA of the Palestinian people, its arrogant and patronising disregard of their dignity and equal humanity will in the end serve no one and nothing.

Least of all the so-called peace process between Palestinians and Israelis.
