Palestinian legal experts prepare official draft to end division 27Feb11 February 28, 2011

A group of legal experts agreed Sunday to prepare a document based on the constitution and in accordance with Palestinian law to end division between Fatah and Hamas.

The initiative came from a group of legal experts, university professors, lawyers, judges and a number of legal and civil society organizations, according to Mohammad Ahmad, one of its participants and a law lecturer at Birzeit University.

The document will work out legal measures to end the state of division as well as its aftermath, until the stage of elections announced by President Mahmoud Abbas, according to Ahmad.

“It is important to come up with legal solutions to end many disagreements which led to the division, and bring everyone out of this state,” he added.

The group formed a specialized committee to prepare the document, a draft of which will be ready within 10 days and shown to all parties.

There is national movement by large sectors of Palestinian society recently, in view of the events in the Arab countries, focusing on ending political division between Fatah and Hamas in the West Bank and Gaza and on ending the occupation.
