David Macilwain (VIC) responds to The Australian on the Marrickville saga 25Mar11 March 26, 2011

I am disturbed to see the Australian’s ongoing and unconditional support for Israel creating such a smokescreen around the Green’s platform in the NSW election. People support Green policies on many issues of local as well as international importance and would like to see less attention paid to this single issue of the BDS campaign against Israel, as long as this attention constitutes a negative political campaign. And while we are endlessly reminded of Israel’s ‘truly democratic’ nature, the newly empowered citizens of Arab nations, including Palestine, would be less easily convinced of this self-evident fiction – how can a declared ‘Jewish state’ that includes Arab muslims possibly be democratic?

Fiona Byrne is not running for election to the Israeli Knesset, so her views on the Boycott campaign are not vitally important to ordinary Australians, even though there are many people who would support her stance in the same way they support the rights of Egyptians and Libyans and Bahrainis to self determination and freedom from repression.
