The Israeli offensive in Gaza was described by Amnesty international as ’22 days of death and destruction’. This eyewitness account brings home the horror of life in Gaza beneath the bombs.

In 2006 a group of people who had worked with the International Solidarity Movement in Palestine, and been blacklisted for it by Israel, formed the Free Gaza Movement. One of them was Australian Sharyn Lock, who after her second successful voyage to Gaza in 2008 found herself in the midst of Israel’s attack on Gaza by land, air and sea. With others from the International Solidarity Movement, Sharyn volunteered with Palestinian ambulances, assisting them as they faced overwhelming civilian casualties. On her return she worked with friend and fellow ISM veteran Sarah Irving to turn her blogs into an informative, candid insight into Gaza which the mainstream media has been unable to provide.

“Gaza: Beneath the Bombs” provides a view of Gaza difficult to glimpse from outside – of a people who face their oppression not only with courage but with humour.

Sarah Irving is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in Electronic Intifada, Guardian Online and New Internationalist. She was a volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement in Palestine in 2001-2 and co-ran Olive Co-operative, leading solidarity tours to the West Bank and sourcing fairtrade Palestinian products, in 2003-6. She helped to launch the Free Gaza movement in the UK in 2007. She is also the author of two forthcoming books, a new edition of the Bradt Guide to Palestine (2011) and a biography of Palestinian fighter Leila Khaled (2012).
