Israeli incursion into Joseph’s Tomb planned for tomorrow 23May11 May 24, 2011

IMEMC -   23 May 2011

PNN has reported the approval of a visit by Israel MK’s and illegal settlers to Joseph’s Tomb, near Nablus, tomorrow at 11 am. The visit has been approved by Israeli Defence Minister, Ehud Barrack, to take place in the day time tomorrow under the protection of the Israeli military.

Joseph’s tomb has been a flash point for clashes between local Palestinians and Israeli settlers in the area due to its religious significance for Jews, Muslims and Christians alike. It lies in Palestinian Authority controlled zones and any visits by Israeli’s are to be coordinated with Palestinian forces, according to prior agreements.

The visit tomorrow is said to be a response to last month’s incident in which an Israeli was shot and killed by a Palestinian policeman during a uncoordinated visit to the area, according to PNN sources.

Protesters are being called, via the Facebook page of the Popular Resistance Front, to gather at Josephs Tomb tomorrow at 11 to prevent the visit through non violent demonstrations. The group is said to be concerned that settlers will occupy the area.

Contentious visits have often been the catalyst to further uprisings among Palestinians. Most famously the visit of prior Israeli PM Arial Sharon to the Western Wall at the site of the Temple Mount, one of Muslims most sacred sites, ignited the second intifada in 2000.
