Freedom Flotilla 2 is to set sail for Gaza within days 18Jun11 June 19, 2011

The Palestinian Information Centre -  18 June 2011

The European campaign to lift the siege on Gaza has said that the Freedom Flotilla 2 carrying relief material to the Gaza Strip would set sail for the coastal enclave within days.

It said in a press statement on Friday that the oppressive Israeli siege for the fifth year running was depriving 1.7 million inhabitants of their basic needs.

The reasons for sending the first fleet a year go were still there especially regarding the scarcity of the minimum requirements of human needs, pointing to the current depletion of medicine and baby milk, the campaign said.

It said that recent UN reports pointed to the tragic conditions in Gaza as a result of the siege, noting the absence of any serious international moves to end the blockade, which is the longest in modern history.

The campaign said that the fleet would sail at its fixed date regardless of obstacles facing some of its participants and regardless of Israeli threats.

It said that activists from 12 European countries would be on board the vessels carrying aid material. It explained that tens of European parliamentarians and senior figures would participate in the fleet in addition to hundreds of solidarity activists while 40 media outlets would cover the event live.

The campaign, which is one of the founding members of the Freedom Flotilla coalition, said that the European countries should provide protection for their nationals aboard the fleet against any possible Israeli attack.
