Dora McPhee (VIC) responds to “Fame, not freedom, is the goal of the latest flotilla bound for Gaza” –   The Age, 23 June, 2011

I am not sure whom is more to blame – Rowan Dean for writing an opinion piece (June 22,2011) loaded with false information to support his appalling views or The Age for publishing such an article designed to pretend that the siege and blockade of Gaza has miraculously disappeared.

The fact is Israel’s siege and blockade of Gaza is multi-tiered and brutally calibrated to keep the Palestinians living in a state of deprivation with no hope for the future. While not actually starving them or causing too great an humanitarian crisis, it is still a collective punishment perpetrated against a civilian population and as such is a war crime.

The second fact is if Egypt opens the Rafah crossing permanently with no restrictions (something which to date has not happened, despite Dean’s assertion) it will only have a miniscule affect on alleviating Israel’s siege as only one percent of goods trucks can go through Rafah as it is designed for people not goods.
