Ruth Pollard’s report (SMH October 9) paints a grim picture. I have travelled to the Occupied West Bank several times and seen at first hand the oppression and humiliation of the indigenous population at the hands of Israeli settlers and troops. I have gathered first-hand evidence of mosques burnt and defaced, children run down, houses destroyed, whole villages terrorised. While observing peaceful protests against ongoing land thefts I have been tear-gassed repeatedly and wounded by a plastic-coated steel bullet. If this is the response to the presence of a 70-years-old Australian committed to non-violence one can imagine the suffering of the Palestinians who have endured 44 years of brutal military occupation of their land!
