Egyptian-Israeli contacts are to implement the second phase of the swap and prepare a list 22Oct11 October 22, 2011

IMEMC  -  21 October 2011

The Palestinian-swap deal will include the release of 550 Palestinian detainees within two months. Israel, however, will be choosing them without the need of new negotiations with Hamas. Israel has stated that they will not choose anyone who they consider “dangerous” to the state of Israel.

In addition, the newspaper quoted a speech from a senior Israeli political source that “there is a talk about releasing some Palestinian detainees who are not sentenced to life in prison and who did not participate in killing Israelis.

Egypt is also seeking to intervene in the fate of the nine remaining female detainees, who were not included in the phase one list, due to being arrested after the negotiations regarding names took place. They are expected to be released during the second phase of the deal, or separately beforehand.

Israel is still holding 5,300 Palestinian detainees, 22 of whom are elected legislators, and 280 are children, in violation of international law.
