Dr Vacy Vlazna writes to Australian Ambassador to the UN re Australia’s vote against Palestine being granted membership of UNESCO 2Nov11 November 2, 2011

 H.E Mr Gary Quinlan.
Ambassador
Australian Mission to the UN

Your Excellency

Australia’s vote against Palestine’s full membership to UNESCO is disgraceful and reprehensible.

Since the Howard regime, Australia’s high principles on the matter of Palestine have been ceded for sycophantic apeing of US partiality for Israel.

The majority of the world’s nations (obviously those not bought off or pressured by the USA or Israel) recognise Palestine’s right to statehood under international law.

I concur with UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova’s  statement that Palestine’s admission to UNESCO is “a mark of respect and confidence”.  This is in marked contrast to America’s pathetic hissy fit with its vindictive cut of funds to UNESCO  jeopardising the crucial humanitarian work of UNESCO globally.

I  applaud  the honorable nations who welcomed Palestine to  UNESCO.

I wish, as an Australian, I could have  been proud of my country on this historic occasion instead of feeling utmost shame.
