During Holocaust Rememberance Day in 2011, Israeli President Shimon Peres called Israel the most “anti-racist” country in the world. But this in-depth look at the xenophobia that is rampant and growing in Israeli society–and that is common to citizens and politicians alike–tells a very different story.
Journalist David Sheen created the new video report to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on behalf of the African Refugee Development Center. It details the state’s discrimination against African refugees and politicians’ and rabbis’ racist incitement against African asylum seekers. The video also includes interviews with Israelis who oppose the mere presence of Africans in their country.
“Racism Report: Africans in Israel” also corrects misconceptions that are commonly held by the Israeli public, such as the myth that Africans are responsible for rising crime rates. In actuality, refugees have a lower crime rate than that of the locally-born population. The video report also takes a look at the religious and historical roots of Israeli xenophobia.
