Ron Witton (NSW) writes to Gabriel Gate alerting him to BDS actions against Israel and his enorsement of the Isareli “Gourmet Pearl Couscous” 9Mar12 March 8, 2012
Dr Witton wrote this letter to Gabriel Gate in December 2011. He has to date received no reply.
Dear Gabriel.
I came across a packet of Gourmet Pearl Couscous endorsed by you and thought I would write to you about it being sourced from Israel. As you may be aware, Israel is currently in breach of a great many international laws with regard to human rights. This is particularly so with regard to its illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories where their âsettlementsâ are colonising Palestinian land. These âsettlementsâ are evicting those who have lived there since time immemorial, and by their very presence are destroying any hope of the much vaunted âtwo state solutionâ.
I have written on this myself (see âWhy I have stopped being Jewishâand have become a supporter of the world-wide BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) Movement which is gaining momentum here in Australia where its public prominence is beginning to mirror the similar boycott movement that helped end apartheid in South Africa.
I wonder if you might lend your weight to the BDS movement by taking steps to endorse couscous (and other products) only from countries not associated with human rights abuses?
I thought it would be appropriate to write to you personally rather than alert the Australian campaign to the Gourmet Pearl Couscous product so it can be listed in the BDS Booklet produced regularly by the Australians for Palestine which lists the growing number of Israeli products found in Australia that are becoming the subjects of well-publicised boycotts.
Thank You.
