Gareth Smith (NSW) writes to the Byron Echo re peaceful protest against Israeli singer Mosh Ben Ari 13Apr12 April 13, 2012

Les Einhorn is upset that the Echo published details of our peaceful witness for the suffering of the Palestinian people at the Mullumbimby Civic Hall where Israeli singer Mosh Ben Ari was in concert (Letters, April 10).  Les cannot be so naive that he fails to realise that although Mosh sings songs of peace, love and harmony he cannot be considered a serious challenge to the Zionist narrative or else his Australian tour would not be advertised on the websites of the Israeli embassy and the Zionist Foundation of Australia. One of Mosh’s colleagues told me that life wasn’t too bad for Palestinians so it’s not surprising that this ignorance leads Mosh to sing in a “vacuum” while, wittingly or otherwise, helping to deodorise Israel’s stinking, illegal practices. Les and those who think like him should read Jonathon Cook’s “Disappearing Palestine: Israel’s Experiments in Human Despair”, Zed Books, 2010 which details the barbarous, criminal treatment Israel is meting out to Palestinians. In the face of this incontrovertible evidence the Rabbinical Council of Jewish Voice for Peace wrote an open letter to the US United Methodist and Presbyterian churches which says in part: “Every day Jewish leaders – we among them – are stepping forward to express outrage over the confiscation of Palestinian land, destruction of farms and groves and homes, the choking of the Palestinian economy and daily harassment and violence against Palestinian people. Members of the Jewish community are increasingly voicing their support for nonviolent popular resistance against these outrages – including the kind of cautious, highly-specified divestment such as the United Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church (USA) are preparing to undertake.”(Read the letter and watch the video). It’s about time Les Einhorn, the Jewish community and the Australian government faced the facts and found their conscience to also step forward like these brave American rabbis.
