Dr Ron Witton (NSW) writes to Monash University’s Vice-Chancellor re Limmud Oz and censorship 27May12 May 27, 2012

Dear Vice-Chancellor,

As an academic and as a person of Jewish descent, I am most concerned at Monash University hosting Limmud Oz given that the organizers of Limmud Oz, the annual Jewish festival of ideas, have cancelled a workshop by contributors to a recent book Beyond Tribal Loyalties: Personal Stories of Jewish Peace Activists, which had previously been scheduled on the program.

By hosting its conference, Monash, an institution commmitted to the free flow of ideals, becomes complicit in the hypocrisy of Limmud Oz, which according to its website, has the following principles:
-Respects diverse Jewish expression
-Connects and engages -Communal and democratic
-Explores Australian Jewish identities
-Creating space for ideas and reflection
-Igniting activism
-Forum for Jewish dialogue

I wonder if you could raise this issue with Limmud Oz as soon as possible before Monash University’s good name becomes sullied by this grubby act of censorship.
