Hackers attack PA news site 28May12 May 28, 2012

Ma’an News Agency  -  27 May 2012

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — Hackers on Sunday took over the official Palestinian Authority news agency and published a report on a file allegedly leaked from the PA’s General Intelligence.

Wafa news site was briefly taken offline on Sunday morning.

Hackers published a report allegedly based on a PA intelligence document revealing that the Ramallah-based government had founded a Geneva-based human rights organization as a front for intelligence work.

The report was previously published on In Light Press and Kofia Press websites, which were among several news sites blocked by PA Attorney General Ahmad al-Mughni earlier this year. In May, President Mahmoud Abbas issued formal instructions reversing the order to censor websites.

The PA’s official Voice of Palestine radio on Sunday said anti-PA groups were behind the attack on Wafa. The hackers sought “to interrupt one of the official Palestinian sources of news for suspicious purposes,” it said.

Voice of Palestine added that the attack coincided with Wafa’s preparations to mark its 40th anniversary.
