Save life of Akram Rikhawi on his 95th day of hunger strike 16Jul12 July 16, 2012
Alternative Information Centre   -  15 July 2012
UFree Network urges all human rights defenders around the world to take urgent action, and to publicise the case of Akram Rikhawi, 95 days on hunger strike, the longest serving hunger striker in the world. By his hunger strike Akram Rikhawi represents the voices of Palestinian political prisoners and detainees.
Organize a picket or protest outside the Israeli embassy or consulate in your location and demand the immediate release of Akram Rikhawi and all Palestinian political prisoners and detainees. (See material you can use for pickets and protests below).Â
 Demand the following:Â
 1. That Akram Rikhawi be granted release on humanitarian grounds.
2. The immediate transfer of Akram Rikhawi and the transfer of all prisoners on hunger strike for more than 40 days to public hospitals.
3. Unrestricted access for independent physicians to all hunger strikers.
4. That no hunger striker be shackled while hospitalized.
5. That all hunger strikersâespecially those in advanced stages of hunger strikeâbe allowed family visits, while they are still lucid.
6. That all information be given to families as to the medical condition of their loved ones, which is the responsibility of hospitals and medical staff in accordance with standards of medical ethics.
8. To immediately and unconditionally release all administrative detainees.
9. To end the punitive measures used to quell the efforts of the hunger strikers, who are engaged in legitimate protest.
10. Call for a fact finding mission to be organised by the European parliament to examine Israelâs treatment to Palestinian political prisoners and specifically hunger strikers.
UFree Network has issued Action Alerts since Akramâs condition became critical – we encourage you to distribute the letter campaign and ask MEPs to intervene immediately before he dies! Link to the letter campaign (click on ‘Take Action’): http://ufree-p.net/
Write to the International Committee of the Red Cross and other human rights organisations to urge them to act swiftly to save Akram Rikhawiâs life and all Palestinian political prisoners. Email the ICRC, whose humanitarian mission includes monitoring the conditions of prisoners, at JER_jerusalem@icrc.org, and inform them about the life threatening situation of Akram. ICRC must now act to save Palestinian prisoners from Israeli cruel and inhumane treatment.
