UNRWA/CARE APPEAL FOR PALESTINIAN REFUGEES Aug 2012 August 21, 2012
In April 2011, the United Nations Relief & Works Agency for Palestine refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in collaboration with private sector established CARE Programme (Catastrophic Ailment Relief Programme) to support patients suffering from chronic catastrophic diseases and whose treatment is usually expensive and prolonged. In one year, CARE programme succeeded in extending support to more than 200 patients suffering from health conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and those whose in-hospital treatment was very expensive.
Tens of Palestine Refugees in Lebanon need organ transplantation each year, and tens of children need to undergo cardiac surgeries. However, very few are able to undergo these sophisticated procedures due to their high costs. These patients are debilitated by their physical problems and many of them lose the chance to work due to frequent admissions to hospitals; others become home-bound and thus lose the opportunity to enjoy a healthy and normal life. Financial restraints also mean that the families of these patients have to make the difficult choice between securing the needed treatment for the patients or meeting the daily basic needs of their families.
The appeal that the Agency launched in August 2011, succeeded in securing treatment for four out of the five patients who needed organ transplantation.
⢠Ibrahim will be travelling soon to Italy to undergo a bone marrow transplant.
⢠Hoda underwent a successful bone marrow transplant a few months ago.
⢠Ahmad succeeded in getting a new kidney and he is currently leading a normal life. He was also able to secure a job that allows him to support his family with dignity.
⢠Ibrahim H. underwent a successful kidney transplant.
⢠Unfortunately, Hussein was not able to undergo the kidney transplant because of medical complications. However, two patients in need of kidney transplant were able to benefit from the funds that were earmarked to Hussein.
For the second year, UNRWA is launching this special appeal today with the hope to relieve the plight of four Palestine Refugees patients in Lebanon in need of organ transplantation or sophisticated cardiac surgeries.
The deadline for the appeal is the end of September 2012.
