Gareth Smith (NSW) writes to the Norther Star re the government’s decision to abstain in UN 30Nov12 December 1, 2012

The Gillard government’s decision to abstain from voting in Thursday’s UN General Assembly which will consider Palestine’s upgraded status bid, is an act of the utmost bastardry. As a lawyer Prime Minister Gillard should very well know that international law is totally on the side of the Palestinians who suffer a myriad daily hassles from 500 military checkpoints in the West Bank and the apartheid wall which severs farmers from their crops, children from their schools and families from each other. Gaza is the biggest outdoor prison in the world and suffers from lack of basic living needs including drinking water, medical supplies and electricity. Its farmers and fishermen are regularly shot at. What Gillard and her “Israel first” colleagues are afraid of is the right of Palestinians, should their bid be successful, in referring Israel to the International Criminal Court for Crimes Against Humanity. Every Australian should be profoundly ashamed that our government sides with the U.S. and Israel, which boasts the world’s fourth largest military, and tramples the underdog Palestinian people even further into the ground.
