BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — The Dutch Foreign Ministry advised businesses this week not to label products from illegal settlements as made in Israel, Israeli media reported.
The Dutch ministry said Wednesday that it advised business owners to replace ‘Made in Israel’ labels with ‘Product from Israeli settlement.’
The labeling applies to fresh vegetables, fruit, wine, honey, olive oil, beef, poultry eggs and cosmetic products. The labeling guidelines are a recommendation only.
The Dutch government issued the advice on the basis that labeling products made in the occupied Palestinina territories as made in Israel is “misleading”, as the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip are all recognized as being occupied by Israel.
The Boycott, Divestment and Sanction campaign calls for applying boycotts against Israel until it meets its obligations under international law, which include ending the occupation of Palestinian territories, granting refugees their right of return and ending illegal settlement activity.
In early 2010, PA prime minister Salam Fayyad launched the National Dignity Fund, which aimed to increase the availability of Palestinian produce in local markets and end the sale of produce from illegal settlements.
As part of the campaign, the PA distributed a pamphlet detailing well-known brand names, furnishing companies, farms, dairy produce, water, wine, household fixtures, toys as well as plastics and surgical equipment manufactured in illegal West Bank settlements.
