194816_345x230LONDON (Ma’an) — The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command says it is preparing units to conduct operations against Israel in the occupied Golan Heights, Reuters reported Saturday.

The Syria-based Palestinian faction said in a statement Friday that “it will form brigades to work on liberating all violated (Israeli-occupied) territories, first and foremost the occupied Golan,” according to Reuters.

The group encouraged Syrian citizens to volunteer “in the formation of the resistance,” the statement added.

Palestinian officials insist that refugees in Syria are not involved in the deadly war rocking the country, citing security concerns for the vulnerable refugee population if they are perceived to take sides.

But Syria’s uprising has split Palestinian loyalties, with many ordinary Palestinians sympathetic to the uprising by their fellow Sunnis, and others recalling the Syrian government’s long-support for Palestinians.

The PFLP-GC is aligned with embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Israel captured the Golan from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day war and subsequently annexed it.
