Gareth Smith (NSW) writes to editor of Byron Shire Echo re getting media coverage for future Palestine events 5Jun13 June 5, 2013

I am trying my best to get a grip on how best to have Byron Friends of Palestine events covered by the Echo. Last year we entered the Brunswick Heads Sand Castle Competition and built a sand replica of Israel’s Apartheid Wall complete with Palestinian sand houses being demolished by an Israeli (Tonka) toy) bulldozer. Our event generated a lot of public interest and we talked to your photographer Jeff Dawson as he walked around our exhibit, but no mention or picture appeared in the Echo. Once again we notify you of our Gaza Aid Flotilla event and once again photographers were present who photographed me on the river, but there was no mention or picture in the Echo. Please advise me on how we can ensure that the Echo receives and acts on our press releases. Should we send you faxes and emails followed up by telephone calls? Next year we will be entering the Mullumbimby to Brunswick Heads Paddle Event and would love to have our creative and humanitarian efforts on behalf of the Palestinians recognised by our local voice – the Echo.
