Israel may cut off electricity supply to West Bank 23Jun13 June 23, 2013

israel-blocks-electricity-repairsIsrael is studying proposals to cut the electricity supply to the occupied West Bank as a punitive measure for unpaid bills owing to the Israeli Electricity Company, Israeli TV channel 10 has revealed. The debts amount to around $230 million.

Cutting off the supply is just one of the options being considered by the Israeli Ministerial Council; the others include deducting the amount outstanding from tax revenues due to the Palestinian Authority and cancelling the operating licence for a Palestine electricity company in Jerusalem.

According to the television station, the Israeli Electricity Company justifies taking such steps by distinguishing between Israeli customers, who pay their bills, and Palestinians who do not pay, it is claimed, but still receive an electricity supply.
